Gema R. Olivo is a mineral deposit geologist. Her main research interest is to understand processes involved in the genesis of hydrothermal ore deposits, particularly precious metal deposits using a multidisciplinary approach. This involves integrating detailed mapping, petrographic, mineral chemistry, isotopic and fluid inclusion studies, whole-rock geochemistry, and ore and alteration mineral stability investigations. Understanding of these processes will allow for developing more refined genetic models, which will lead to better exploration strategies, improving the odds of success for global mineral exploration. Her research currently focuses on the study of gold deposits in Archean greenstone belts (Canada and Brazil), and in Mesozoic sedimentary belts (Otago-Alpine Schists, New Zealand), in carbonate sequences (Carlin-trend, Nevada), as well as hydrothermal PGE-Au occurrences in the Flin Flon greesntone belt (Canada), Fortaleza de Minas (Brazil), in Lake Superior-type iron-formations (Brazil) and magmatic-hydrothermal precious and rare metals in Archean and Proterozoic belts, including Carajás district (Brazil). She has also been involved in the studies of Zr, F, REE deposits in South Africa (Pilanesberg Project) and New Mexico (Gallinas Deposit), Ag-rich epithermal-type deposits in Peru (Santo Toribio and Pozo Rico) and Argentina (Navidad), and VMS prospect in Dominican Republic (San Antonio Concession) and Canada (Timmins camp and Nunavut). Recently, she has been involved in the application of the characterization of gold deposits to ore processing (e.g., Yanacocha project, Peru).
